Adventure Safaris
For travelers who want the wild on its own terms.
The dry season is easier. It is not always better. Green-season expeditions, forest trekking and time on foot put you in country that a comfortable itinerary drives past, and they ask something of you in return.
These journeys are built for people who would rather walk into a valley than photograph it from the road, and who do not mind that the weather gets a vote.
On foot where it is allowed
Walking safaris and guided treks, led by people who work these routes year-round rather than seasonally.
Primates across three countries
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, paired with Tanzania's savannah so the trip is not a single-note one.
Green-season access
The wet months open country that is unreachable later, and empty the places everyone else visits in July.
Where these run
Bwindi & Volcanoes
Mountain gorilla trekking, permit-led and booked months ahead.
Nyungwe
Chimpanzee tracking and a canopy walk through ancient rainforest.
Empakai & Ngorongoro Highlands
Crater rim trekking away from the vehicle circuit.
Kilimanjaro
All major routes, with acclimatisation days built in rather than trimmed.
Kalahari & Makgadikgadi
Desert that comes alive in the months most itineraries avoid.
When to come
Trekking is best in the drier windows, June to September and December to February, when forest trails are firmer underfoot. The green season, November to March, is the right call for the Kalahari and for anyone who wants the landscape at its most alive and the parks at their emptiest.
